shrimp in a 10 gallon tank

New to this? Start with about 15 shrimp and let the colony grow into the space.

Hardy and forgiving. They self-regulate their population over time.

How this works: Dwarf shrimp have a tiny bioload, so the limit is rarely the water itself. These ranges assume a cycled, planted tank with a sponge filter. Lower density grows bigger shrimp and breeds faster; higher density still works with strong filtration and more frequent water changes.

How many shrimp per gallon?

For Neocaridina shrimp like cherries, 5 to 10 per gallon is the sweet spot. Caridina shrimp want lower density (3 to 5 per gallon) because they need more stable water. Bigger species like Amano shrimp need far more room, around 1 to 2 per gallon. The calculator above applies the right rule for each type automatically.

Remember that shrimp colonies self-regulate. Start modestly, keep your water parameters stable, and let them breed up to the tank's comfortable capacity. For the full breakdown by tank size and species, see our how many shrimp per gallon guide.
