Why TDS matters: Shrimp are sensitive to sudden shifts in dissolved minerals (TDS). A big water change with very different water can shock them even if every individual parameter looks fine. Aim for small, frequent changes that keep the resulting TDS close to where it started. Remineralize RO water before adding it so the new water isn't near-zero TDS.

How much water should I change in a shrimp tank?

For most shrimp tanks, change 10 to 20 percent of the water weekly. Smaller, more frequent changes are far safer than large, occasional ones because shrimp react badly to sudden swings in dissolved minerals (TDS) and pH. The calculator above shows the resulting TDS for any change so you can keep it in a gentle range.

Always match the new water's temperature and remineralize RO water before adding it. For the full routine, see our water change guide and the water parameters cheat sheet.
