Cloudy Water in a Shrimp Tank: Diagnose It by Color and Fix It Safely

Cloudy water in a shrimp tank means something different by color. White is a bacterial bloom, green is algae, brown is tannins. What to do and what to skip.

Cloudy water in a shrimp tank is almost never one problem. It's four, and the color tells you which one you have. Milky white is a bacterial bloom. Green is free-floating algae. Brown or yellow is tannins from wood and leaves. Grey or dusty is substrate that hasn't settled. Each has a different cause, a different risk to your shrimp, and a different fix, and the standard fish-tank advice (dose a clarifier, do a big water change) is wrong for at least two of them and risky for shrimp in all four.

If the tank is new and the water is white, you almost certainly have a bloom. If it went green after you moved the tank near a window or bumped the light timer, it's algae. If you just added wood or leaves, it's tannins.

Milky White Water: Bacterial Bloom

What's happening. Free-floating heterotrophic bacteria are multiplying in the water column, feeding on dissolved organics. In a new tank there isn't an established bacterial population on the filter and surfaces yet, so a spike in food (fish flakes, a dead snail, the organics leaching from new soil) lets the water-borne bacteria explode. Aquarium Co-Op, Aqueon, and Gensou all describe the same trigger list: a tank in its first weeks, overfeeding, adding a lot of livestock at once, something dying unnoticed, or cleaning the filter too aggressively.

Milky water with no visible particles in it is the signature. If you can see specks drifting, that's debris, not a bloom.

Are shrimp at risk? Not from the bacteria themselves. The risk is oxygen. Gensou and the Aquarium Science site both point out that a bloom of heterotrophs consumes a lot of oxygen, and the dip is worst at night when plants stop photosynthesizing too. Shrimp under oxygen stress climb the glass toward the waterline, sit still at the surface, or gather near the filter outflow. What to do.

  2. Add an airstone or raise the filter outflow so it ripples the surface. This is the one action that addresses the actual risk.
  3. Stop feeding for 2 to 3 days, then feed every other day in amounts the shrimp finish within an hour. Shrimp in an established tank have plenty of biofilm to graze.
  4. Leave the filter alone. Cleaning it now removes the bacteria you need.
  5. If you have access to a mature tank, a handful of its gravel or a squeeze of its filter sponge seeds the population and shortens the bloom.
  6. Wait.

How long it takes. Sources disagree here more than anywhere else. Gensou says most blooms resolve in 3 to 7 days. Aquarium Co-Op says 1 to 2 weeks. Build Your Aquarium and Charterhouse Aquatics say it can take weeks. The pattern across those sources is that a bloom in a new tank that isn't being fed heavily runs about a week, and one that's fed through it drags on much longer. A UV sterilizer clears it in 24 to 48 hours per Gensou, but that's new hardware for a problem that ends on its own.

What not to do. Don't do a big water change to clear it. Aquarium Co-Op and Aqueon both note that fresh water brings a new load of dissolved nutrients and the bloom comes back, often thicker, within a day or two. Aqueon's phrasing is "often even worse than before." Sources split on small changes: Gensou says 10 to 20% is fine, Build Your Aquarium suggests 40 to 50%. Green Water: Free-Floating Algae

What's happening. Single-celled algae, phytoplankton, are suspended in the water column by the billions. They need two things: light and dissolved nutrients. The usual triggers are a tank near a window, a light left on far too long (FishLab's example is 24 hours a day), a photoperiod that crept up, or a nutrient spike from overfeeding in a tank without enough plants to compete. Aqueon and FishLab both list nitrate and phosphate from food and waste as the fuel.

Are shrimp at risk? Green water is mostly a cosmetic problem. Aqueon calls it "typically not harmful" to fish and other tank residents. The exception, again, is oxygen at night. FishLab and Algone both warn that a dense bloom consumes oxygen after dark, and the huge total surface area of billions of cells makes green water one of the worst offenders. What to do.

  2. Blackout the tank. Wrap it in a blanket or black bags, lights off, airstone running. Sources give different durations: Gensou 3 to 4 days, FishLab 3 to 5, Aqueon "a few days" with a check at 48 to 72 hours, Aquarium Co-Op 7 to 10 days. Start with 3 days and check. Plants tolerate this fine, and shrimp don't care.
  3. Stuff the filter with fine floss and rinse or replace it every day or two. It catches the cells as they die.
  4. After it clears, pull out the dead algae before it rots and feeds a bacterial bloom. Gensou recommends a 50 to 70% water change here; in a shrimp tank we'd do 25 to 30% on two consecutive days instead.
  5. UV sterilizer if you want it gone fast: Bulk Reef Supply says 24 to 72 hours, FishLab 3 to 5 days.

What not to do. Don't dose an algaecide. Aquifarm and Peqaboo both note that many algaecides are copper-based, and none of them fix the light problem. Don't try to water-change your way out either; Aquarium Co-Op notes green water can't be removed by water changes or fine filtration because the cells reproduce faster than you remove them.

Brown or Yellow Water: Tannins

What's happening. New driftwood, Indian almond leaves, alder cones, and other botanicals release tannins and humic acids that tint the water anywhere from pale yellow to strong tea. This is the one cloudiness that isn't cloudiness at all. The water is clear; it's just colored.

Are shrimp at risk? No. App-aquatic states it plainly: "no direct toxicity to freshwater fish, shrimp, snails, or aquatic plants." Dova Art and Shrimp and Snail Breeder say the same. Many keepers add leaves on purpose, since shrimp graze the softening leaf and the tannins appear to reduce stress. The one thing to watch is pH. Tannins lower pH and eat a little KH, and in soft water under 3 to 4 dKH a lot of fresh wood can push pH down faster than you'd want. Test KH once when you add a big piece.

What to do. Nothing, if you like the look. If you don't, activated carbon in the filter clears the color in 24 to 48 hours and saturates in 3 to 4 weeks; Seachem Purigen does the same job. Regular 20 to 30% water changes dilute it over time. Most wood slows its release within 4 to 12 weeks; large mopani pieces can stain for 2 to 3 months. Grey, Dusty, or Hazy Water: Substrate Fines

What's happening. Sand, gravel, and especially the active soils used in Caridina tanks carry fine particles that lift into the water when the tank is filled or the bed is disturbed. Unwashed gravel is the classic cause in a new tank. Aqua soils are a special case: ADA Amazonia's bag says not to rinse it, and keepers on the Planted Tank forums report clearing anywhere from a few hours to 18 days depending on how gently the tank was filled. Build Your Aquarium notes that clay-based substrates like Seachem Flourite can kick up dust for months every time you vacuum.

Are shrimp at risk? Low. Fine mineral dust can irritate gills, and Build Your Aquarium notes it settles on plant leaves and blocks light, but a shrimp tank with a soil haze for a week isn't in trouble. Ammonia is the bigger worry with active soils, since many of them release it during the first weeks. Test.

What to do. Fine filter floss in the filter, rinsed daily, pulls the particles out. Don't stir the substrate. When you refill after a water change, pour onto a plate or a plastic bag laid on the bed so the stream doesn't dig in. Why Clarifiers and Flocculants Don't Belong in a Shrimp Tank

Water clarifiers work by flocculation: a positively charged polymer binds negatively charged particles into clumps big enough for the filter to catch. It's a real effect and it works in hours on dust and dead algae. Here's why it's still the wrong tool for a shrimp tank.

  • Fin and Flux, reviewing the category, notes the polymers can coat gill tissue at high concentration and that invertebrates are more sensitive to them than fish. Many labels say outright that the product isn't invertebrate-safe.
  • Overdosing is easy in a nano tank, where a "10 gallon" is closer to 8 gallons of actual water once you subtract soil and hardscape, and an overdose can clog filter media and shock livestock.
  • Build Your Aquarium points out they often don't work on bacterial blooms at all, which is the most common cloudiness in a shrimp tank.
  • They treat the symptom. The bloom, the light, or the dust is still there.

Some products are labeled shrimp-safe. Every cloudiness type above clears on its own, so the risk buys you nothing. Skip them.
